Which Type Of Brow Product Is Best For Me?

We have all been there; staring at the array of types of products, the endless amount of shades, with no clue which one is the one. It can be truly overwhelming, especially if you aren’t sure what you’re looking for. Picking the right brow product to suit your needs can be tricky. Don’t worry, I’m here to help!

Let me break down our 4 core types of brow products:

Brow pencils

Brow pencils are quite literally pencils, but for your brows. Some require sharpening like any other pencil, but so many on the market now are retractable for our convenience. They are the most popular and commonly found brow product. They are arguably the easiest to use too, so it’s great for beginners, but it’s perfect for experts and professionals too!

Whether you already have full brows that you want to take to the next level, or you have sparser, patchy brows that need a bit of extra loving, pencils are a great choice. You can be as light or heavy handed as you please. Not only that you can fill in any of those sparser areas or recreate your brow shape entirely.

Pencils offer precision that other brow products may not. This makes it much easier to apply product exactly where you want it with a little bit less correction needed. This also means that they’re perfect for creating the shape and borders of the brow AND filling in the brow too!

To avoid your brow pencil looking to harsh or brows appearing too drawn on, run a spoolie through the brows to disperse and soften the product

Whether you want a bold brow or a natural one, pencils are the perfect one-stop-shop! I highly recommend pencils to anyone and everyone. They are without a doubt a must-have in your makeup collection!

Brow powders

If you’re after a natural look to your brow, powders might just be the way to go.

Used on their own, they can provide a much more lightweight and soft brow due to their softer appearance.

Powder is amazing for lifting up the volume of your brows or for filling in sparser areas, all without looking harsh or too drawn on. The shadow created throughout the brow gives you the perfect dream brow with minimal effort! Application of powders is super quick and easy due to the softness, and can be done in a matter of seconds. I would still recommend brushing a spoolie through the brow to buff through any extra product to avoid any patchiness.

Quite often, brow powders come in a duo: a lighter colour, perfect for shading in the fronts, and a darker colour that is great for the tails of your brows. This can help create a gradient effect through the brow. Although, that is only a guide, as there’s no rules to where each of the colours should be placed. Alternatively you can mix the two colours together to create the perfect shade match, and that works amazingly too!

A brush is required for application (I recommend an angled duo brush) to sweep the product through your brow. Something to consider is that due to its softness, brow powders don’t offer as much coverage and aren’t as buildable as other brow products. Another thing to consider for those of us with dryer skin to consider is that we may not get the best wear out of the product. It can be a little bit tricker to get the product to stick to dryer skin types, causing it to wear off sooner during the day.

Alternatively, brow powders are great for topping off a brow pencil or pomade to help the product last longer and create extra fullness!

Brow pomades

Brow pomades are the secret to longer lasting and bolder brows. Pomades provide more coverage than other brow products, meaning you can create the perfect Instagram brow, and it’s great for covering any scars you might have within your brow too. Pomades work beautifully with a full face of makeup that will last you through the day (or night).

An angled brush is great for application here. Pomades are creamy, meaning that you can create crisper lines to define your brows (compared to products like powders). Once applied, good quality pomades will dry down and become water resistant, or even waterproof depending on the brand! If you want your brow product to hold on through gym, pool, or even just general day-to-day life, pomades are your best friend.

Don’t be scared of a more high-coverage product or wearing pomades on their own. You can still wear pomade with light/natural makeup or on their own. Avoid dipping the brush into the pomade and taking it straight to your brow. Dispersing excess product onto the back of your hand first, then applying to the brow, will lighten the look and it will be much more wearable. Using a lighter hand and a spoolie to buff the product, you can still create a brow that isn’t as bold.

Pomade is life-proof, and is arguably one of the longest lasting products for your brows!

Brow gel

Whether it’s clear or tinted, brow gel can be used with or without other brow products. Clear gels tame and redirect, whilst tinted gels do the same but also add a bit of colour and fullness too!

Brow gels are great for taming your brow hairs; think of it as hairspray for your brows. Brow gels will hold your brow hairs in place throughout the day and help maintain a polished look. Those of us with bushier, wilder brows can use it to tame them and keep the hairs in place. For sparser brows, we can redirect the hairs by brushing them up and outwards to give the illusion of fuller brows.

It’s an incredible topper to finish off your brows, no matter how bushy or sparse.

There is a myriad of brow products on the market, but these 4 are a great starting point for any first-timers, or anyone trying to find a staple product to stick to!
