Your brows have faced a lot of challenges over the years. Maybe you went overboard on the plucking when barely-there arches were a thing. Or perhaps you have thick, curly brows that need regular taming to prevent them from overwhelming your face.
Unless you’re one of those rare (likely mythical) few who were blessed with perfect arches, you’re likely frustrated right now. With brow and lash salons across the country now closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, what can you do when you’re overdue for a shaping or touch-up? The pressure is even greater when you have to video-conference with colleagues or clients and your brows have a mind of their own.
While some services, like waxing, tinting and henna brows, can and should wait until the lockdown is over, it is possible to do basic shaping and maintenance at home. The tips below can help you keep your brows in order until you and your stylist have a happy reunion!
Step One: Identify Your Brow Shape
Before you apply pencils, gel, or tweezers, pinpoint the natural shape of your brows.
To see where they begin, face a well-lit mirror and run a brow pencil vertically from the middle of your nostril to the inner edge of the brow.
To locate their endpoints, align the pencil between the outer corner of your nose and your eye’s outer edge.
Limit any plucking to stray hairs outside your brow shape.
Step Two: Locate Your Brow Arch
In general, the highest point of your natural arch is in the outer third of your eye. Position the brow pencil against the outer corner of your nose and direct it towards your eye. The point of connection is where your arch appears naturally. Once you’ve identified it, pluck any excess hair to clean the shape. If you notice any long, wiry hairs, comb them out and carefully trim them to match the length of the other hairs.
Step Three: Fill In Your Brows
If your brows are thin due to overplucking, age, diet, or other factors, carefully fill in any gaps or sparse areas with a well-sharpened brow pencil. Apply short strokes, following the natural grain of your brow hair, until you’ve created the appearance of depth and fullness.
