Are you looking for a way to make your lashes look longer and fuller? Well, there are two popular treatments for you to choose from, Eyelash Extensions vs lash Lifts. Not sure which one of these two treatments you should go for? Worry not, we’re here to give you the rundown on just how these treatments differ so you can choose the most suitable one for you! Although both of these treatments are used to make the lashes appear longer and fuller, they do in fact work exceptionally differently!
So what exactly are the main differences? We’ve broken down both treatments into their own category below, covering everything from how the treatments work all the way to aftercare and maintenance!
Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent lashes that are bonded onto the base of your natural lash using a specially designed glue. Eyelash extensions can look pretty similar to strip lashes just minus the frustration of trying to apply them, plus they last longer and in some cases can look a lot more natural.
There are various types of eyelash extension styles for you to choose from, ranging from classic eyelash extensions which are one false eyelash attached to one of your natural eyelashes, all the way to volume eyelash extensions which is where multiple false eyelashes can be attached to one natural lash using a “fan” technique.
Extensions also come in a range of lengths, curls and materials to choose from – meaning your eyelash extensions can be completely customisable! Depending on what style and length you go for, it also comes down to the overall health and condition of your natural eyelashes. For example, a false lash extension that is too long or too heavy for that natural eyelash can cause damage over time as your natural eyelash will not be able to support the weight of the extension applied. It’s extremely important that you do your research and only visits reputable salons.
The aftercare and upkeep of extensions is slightly more time consuming than a lash lift, your lash extensions will need to be treated with extra care as accidentally pulling one out can cause a natural lash to come out with it. It’s important to keep your lashes dry for the first 24 hours as the glue is still bonding and avoid mascara on them altogether they will need to be brushed and cleaned every day using a special lash shampoo and you may also need to readjust your sleeping position if you’re someone who likes to sleep on your stomach or side as the friction from your pillow can shorten the lifespan of your extensions.
Your eyelash extensions will also need regular infills every two-three weeks to keep them looking full. The average time for an eyelash extension treatment can take anywhere from 1.5-2 hours onwards, and it’s important to keep in mind your eyes will be closed for the entire treatment – the perfect opportunity for a nap!
A lash lift is essentially a more modernised version of the well-known lash perm. Instead of using a cylinder rod, which can cause the lashes to curl back on themselves, a lash lift involves moulding your natural lashes back onto a slightly curved silicone rod then set using a chemical solution. This results in a similar effect that you would get from using a really good mechanical lash curler.
Lash lifts will last you anywhere between 6 to 8 weeks depending on your lashes, however it is advised you wait until the 8-week mark before getting them lifted again. We recommend pairing your lash lift with a lash tint which can add extra darkness and depth, especially if your lashes are on the lighter side. The upside to lash lifts is they’re suitable for just about everyone!
The silicone rods used to mould your lashes come in a variety of sizes, so regardless if your lashes are slightly shorter or sparse, or long and luscious – there’s a rod size to suit all! Unlike eyelash extensions that require you to be extra careful, lash lifts require no maintenance at all! When it comes to lash lift vs eyelash extensions all you need to worry about is avoiding water and mascara on your lashes for the first 24 hours after your lift, but after that, you’re free to do everything as normal – however, giving them a little brush through in the morning is always a good idea!
Depending on if you get the lash tint done along with your lash lift, the treatment can go for approximately 40-50 minutes, it’s also important to note that you will have your eyes closed during the entire treatment.
Ultimately, the choice is all yours! It all comes down to what you’re wanting to achieve from your eyelashes and how much time and maintenance you’re willing to put into them. Both eyelash extensions and lash lifts make a huge difference to your eyes.
Eyelash extensions definitely add a more dramatic transformation and help add extra fullness and length, as you’re not relying on your natural eyelashes. So, if your eyelashes are quite sparse or short, you might find lash extensions more suited for you.
Lash lifts look much more natural, and we love to get them tinted at the same time to maximise the effect, so if you’re already blessed with naturally long, thick eyelashes, you might find a lash lift is more suited to you. If you suffer from hay-fever or sensitive eyes in general, it may be best to stay clear of the eyelash extensions as they can cause extra irritation.
